Encounter #70: When I grow old.

My friend Kevin put this clip up when Edward Yang died last summer. It's not because I missed seeing The Terrorizer on Friday, nor is it because I'll probably have to miss A Brighter Summer Day this Wednesday, but I've been thinking about Yi Yi a lot recently. It's just so gentle. It's the kind of film I want more of in my life. At a bar tonight my friend Cam was talking about how he wanted to watch a Hayao Miyazaki movie that wasn't Mononoke Hime but was similar to it -- that he hadn't seen -- even though he knows it doesn't exist. I should have told him to watch this picture. Instead we talked about how great John From Cincinnati is... go figure. (I think it makes sense, though.) --RWK

What a cast. Give these men work.

congrats, Lt.
To tide us over until Cuyler finishes his final write up, here's three moments I really enjoyed, in one way or another, last night. Marlo looked so pleased to have some adrenaline running. Slim is the coolest. And, there you have it: Carver is the man for the future. Fitting that the show's best moments belong to its black actors. Here's to Simon and Burns employing so many. Maybe they'll do another series, maybe they won't, but I hope they can do their best to help the careers of some of their stars, like Andre Royo and Clarke Peters and Seth Gilliam, who don't have the kind of profile that Michael K Williams enjoys. I'll have more to say about this next week when Cuy and I transcribe our 10-week conversation on the merits and shortsights of this show. I mean, I've devoted over 60 TV hours of my life to it, it's got to be worth something, right? Right. It's worthy. --RWK

MOBIUS UPDATE: Cuy's last entry can be read here.

Songs #2: Reasons

everybody has their reasons, even this guy
I've been listening to There Is Nothing Wrong With Love a lot in the past month. Probably has something to do with February and all its baggage (social and personal) but I'm not in the mood to investigate that. Rather, I offer the second song on that album (maybe the best song on that long player?) as evidence of another melody (emotion) that's been on repeat in my brain. Plus, of course, it's just a great song: full of life, pathetic explosions, reasons, surprises and, yes, love. --RWK
