Encounter #138: Unheard of.
I'm pretty tired of white people talking about Wayne (as I know Cuy is as well) but allow me this: Wayne knows some hoops. He drops some names you probably don't even want to pay attention to, like Spencer Hawes, noted seven-foot Pacific Northwest redneck Republican. Also, it's unclear who his "we"s refer to, even though "we" all know he's from Nola, not Sacto, and I'm sure he drinks clear alcohol with CP3. He's a genuine weirdo. Songs #33: Like a cop car.
UMYO at it again. After the pure dope "Hook It Up" remix, this one just keeps their smarts coming. It's funny how lil wayne there is in the song now, too. (Did you get my double move?) Also, is that "Gredos" name really a Star Wars joke? Are these guys really that cool? Somehow I doubt that's what they're after. Maybe I'm wrong. In any event, this one is so simple, but effective is leaves me one question: where you at, Huskies? --RWK

Songs #24: Swagger Like Us
The M.I.A. sample (already?!) is actually pretty dope, altho they ride it too much, and everybody's coming pretty hard to match that bassline. But Kanye's on some new autotune tip that I can quite endorse (it's no surprise that Wayne's version works a lot better) but I get the whole syntheti-chic thing their going for. And, is it really that shocking that T.I. does the best? He rides these cinematic beats better than most current rappers; plus, his bluster is micro compared to his track mates, which is appreciated. Understated mugging? Is that possible? It's something about his voice, and how he actually sounds angry. By contrast: Kanye sounds like he phoned that verse in from the mansion of insularity that his life is, that you can see on full display on his blog; Jay's funny, at least, with his opener about skinny jeans, but his singing is, well, hilarious for a different reason; Wayne is pretty gorgeous on most tracks, and this breezy "just playin" style is typical, great, slight. It boils down to this, though, for me: T.I. talks about his dad! --RWK [via Discobelle]
T.I. feat Kanye, Jay, Wayne - Swagger Like Us (zshare)
[Pix from a "hip-hop" movie that can probably stand in as some kind of "black all star" flick. But I probably shouldn't go and say things like that for obvious reasons, like, sweeping generalizations are dumb.]

Encounter #95: A Milli
I feel like Cuy should write his own essay about the odd appeal of Weezy but for now I just want to say I'm mostly fascinated by how plain weird a figure he has become. While, at the same time, not growing any taller. Only his muscles and ego and rep seem to get bigger (if not balloon). And he barely rhymes. Oh, and, yea, this is a terrible video. (An appropriately odd remix by Nadastrom can be found here.) --RWK

Encounter Bill Clinton?
Because im an odd creature of pop-culture i read all the magazines on the stand at my local liquor store. _GQ_ is one of them (Kanye is on the cover). It is the Men of the Year issue featuring Kanye, Weezy, Casey Affleck, Seth Rogen, other good looking or talented (or both) dudes ... and Bill Clinton. I read the article, it made me cry. _GQ online_ only provides an interview that is not even good. read it if you like. But go buy this month's issue and enjoy.

Note: this recommendation comes from a guy who knows nothing about politics, world affairs, Bill Clinton, Africa, AIDS, etc... I dont say this with pride, just to display that the article is not only working on the level of what it discusses, but how (seemingly) perfect it portrays the more than fascinating former President Clinton.

Mostly ridiculous but... looks like Carter III isn't droppin' in '07
I guess confronting the problem of arguably talented and clever rappers putting out terrible videos is quite the task. Maybe all the "Kanye shouldnt rap" rap is off slightly. I mean his "Throws some D's" remix is great, the video is better and he didnt have to steal a 10 year old Daft song. The attempt at making fun of itself is still hopeless because no matter how moral The Game wants to be and how much of a slut Kanye jokes to be, they still cant get away from the mirror. Check it out.
Plus, Kanye's D's
I dont think Fincher is comin back to music unless 3000 convinces him to. And Gondry should stick with Chapelle. Maybe Gore Verbinski ??? It could work. --CB
