Marketing #56: Where the price is the brand is (on) your body

Or, where sex is recession proof. I'm sure you've seen this already, but, well, I think the ad work for this film is great. Of course I'm gonna see it. Not only does the whole pornstar crossover thing appeal to me (duh), I want to see what Manohla called, in its Sundance rough cut, a Godardian take on commidification or some crap. I also want to see Glenn. --RWK

Effective Marketing #55: Anti

Lars Von Trier is a weirdo. I have never been set on where I stand with him. At certain points in my past I thought he was some kind of genius. Then I hated him. Hard. Now somebody I love thinks he's kinda great, and thinks Dogville in particular is defo great. Dogville was the last movie of his that I saw, and it made me mad. Not quite sure whether I'll see this one, either, but it's an effective trailer nonetheless. Just seems like another exercise, a point to prove, rather than a "real film." But what do I know? I've only seen the trailer... --RWK

Genius Marketing #54: Girlfriend
Design Poach #14

spots
Soderbergh, for all his silliness, is a smart guy. Also, um, great mouth. And while we're at it: did you see this one? --RWK

Genius Marketing #53: Pyramid montage

TCM's 2001 ad campaign for their broadcast of Tarkovsky films. Scored by that one band all nerds seem to like. --RWK [via darren]

Genius Marketing #52: Gangster violence and some language.

As said over here: Wherein the fan side of things gets tickled into action. Thank you, Michael Mann. (And the ad people at Universal.) Why? The teaser trailer for his summer tentpole, Public Enemies, is now available for viewing. After last night's waste, I'm happy to be excited about Ho'wood product because I can trust that, unlike that bloated advertisement masquerading as a "movie," this feature will only get better the longer it lingers on screen. Also, it will be gorgeous without a ton of digital paint. It will weigh something, too, I imagine, despite its speed. --RWK

Genius Marketing #51: Sita sings online

After much copyright deliberation (headaches), Nina Paley has announced that her film, Sita Sings the Blues, will air for public consumption: first, you can stream the entire film at Reel13 (now), and then, second, it will be available in a variety of qualities "free to copy and share" after it airs March 7th at 1045pm as part of Reel 13 on WNET TV. Once I'm done with a few projects, I definitely plan on watching the film and, if moved, writing about its flash fun. --RWK [via sean]

Genius Marketing #50: Gallo in a Coppola (not sexual)

tetro!
FFC has a new movie and that new movie has a new website. CLICK HERE! to see a vlog by FFC himself in his Napa Valley home rapping about the project in a few too-close close-ups and dropping bombs like "Gallo's mad brilliant, son." Or something. I wanna see this thing. It's also got that lady who played sex with Gael and Diego in that Alfonso Cuaron movie. --RWK

Terrible Marketing #49: Chris Quinn is HARD

look at me!
I'm sorry. --RWK

Inglorious Marketing #48: Basterds

Of course I would blog it, too. What do I think? I think it's kinda silly, of course, and easily just a marketing ploy to amp up all the "dumb" stuff, but it still has me worried. I really cannot evaluate at this time. It's that confounding. Except, of course, that I fucking hate Eli Roth (defo the worst part of those sexy bar scenes in Death Proof). Also, am I wrong or is BJ Novak only ever a toolface assclown? Sam Levine? Clearly I have not read the script like a lot of other nerds out there in iNet-land. --RWK

You hafta be kidding me. Steriods build jeans up, too? (Ad circa 2006.) --RWK

Genius Marketing #46: Bushwick white people

At least, it's genius marketing for any young, hip thangs who dream of the idiot lifestyle such a 'hood as Da Wick (my term) can offer. This makes me vom in all kinds of ways. I just have no use for it: sure, those girls are pretty, but you can see those girls on any L train; and, no, I do NOT like the song. I liked it better when it was Swedish, and actually fun, and not just a costume. Who's grumpy today for no good reason? --RWK [via jace, who makes way better music]

(Odd) Genius (?) Marketing #45: (500) parentheses

The cinetrix has already thrown up about this lil nugget of intrigue. And she's got a dialectic thing going. Me? I've just got a lil confusion and mouth-watered wide eyes that say, rather simply, I'd like to see this thing. No doubt it will be a hit. Unless it's super weird, by some chance, and it alienates rather than invites its target audience of swooners. One can hope, I suppose, given the tone of the trailer's narration (and genuinely ironic construction, minus that dumb song of goo), if not some of the maybe-maudlin moments highlighted. --RWK

Genius Marketing #44: Shepard filmmakers
Reclamation #4?
Design Poach #7!

As in marketing for the country. And, these guys. And, Paste Magazine. I shoulda made one of a lady. And, probably, more Americans. But, well, these are the pix I have on my hard drive. You can make your own posters by clicking here. --RWK

Genius Marketing #44: Stellet Licht

Now at Film Forum. Go yesterday. Go three times. Go as often as possible. Get Carlos enuf monies so he can get another lovely thing out in America. He's the real deal, people. I mean, it's even better now than it was then, cuz I'm here now, and not there. And this trailer is just great. It made me cry a lil the first time I saw it. And then the movie did other things to me, which were unexpected and beautiful. All in all, it's needless to say: I'm feeling this. --RWK

(NOT) Genius Marketing #43: A Merry Strange Christmas Tale

I don't know how you would market this movie anyways but I'll just say that I probably would have made a different trailer. More and more I think trailers should just be scenes from the movies, which is why this little thing below is a way better barometer and offering:

See? Go see it. It's on demand, too. --RWK

Genius Marketing #42: A View to a Kill

Cuz I been thinkin Bond recently (_QoS_ is straight bizarre), and cuz Slayo thinks nothing will ever top this one. Judging by the looks of this thing, which is pretty bizarre in its own right/s, he may be right. Or wrong. Drastically so. Then again (again), Walken wanting to destroy Silicon Valley in 1985? Grace Jones, period? Golden Gate WHAT!? --RWK
Five minutes later:
Slayo: hahaha
Walken was ahead of his time
RWK: defo
Sent at 11:14 AM on Wednesday
Slayo: also, roger moore is like 80 years old in that movie
RWK: hahahaha
like the greg oden of bond
Slayo: hahahaha

(Not) Genius Marketing #41: Everlasting Moments

Martha's been goin gaga for this film on the email front (exposure, What!) as she works together some words after seeing the thing in Santa Fe. Kinda crappy trailer sometimes, kinda crappy title, too, sometimes, but I really want to see this sadness. I mean, I can sense how it would/could (will?) hang together as one of The Great Things. I'll grant her that. She's crazy smart, and funnier than most people--in the written word no less. Have you read her blog yet? Get on it, dummy, like, yesterday and the month before. --RWK

Genius Marketing #40: Wes and Brad and yellow and a phone.

Ain't this cute? The Japanese can pay these people the right amounts of money. Luckily, these guys (these guises) got some wit up their faux-Hulot sleeves. And Robert Yeoman. --RWK [via cinetrix]

Genius Marketing #39: How many platforms can we conflate?

He's got it down to a science, sonnz! Like everything in his life. Even those post-game kisses for the girls are a calculation. It's bizarre. But now that he's become -- what? -- a man (what?), he's affable. His will to power is subsumed in the fun of his celebrity. And this kind of marketing is really just genius. "Oh, we get the unadulterated look?" HEEEHCK no. It's like Romany Malko says, "You think all'a this--you think any of this is a accident?" Every angle has been played here. He even gets to plug another sport for Nike footwear. I guess there was some kind of webcast about the shoe. But my iNets have been down for a minute. Whatevs. This is hilarious, smart, sexy. I want those shoes! --RWK
