Encounter #72: A More Perfect Union
What Community? #23: Ladders of opportunity

I know I'm late to this party. Of course I found my way to this through the blogosphere. From Ed Gonzalez, in fact. Race still matters in our community's conversation. This is a thoughtful approach to taking up the dialogue. It's inheriting our great moral perfectionism in such a proud, ardent, stirring fashion I was moved more than I could expect. So, this Sunday: Be well. Happy Easter. Go find some eggs. There's plenty out there. You just have to be open to the world to find and appreciate them. They're there, they're the first rungs, they lead up: they lead forward. --RWK

Encounter #71: Je Veux Te Voir (encore)

I put the old video up over here. This is the new version. There's no more singalong subtitles but there are exercise balls, short shorts, neon colors and, still, all that talk about dicks in action in pornographic flicks. Yes? --RWK

Good Morning! 2001

GOOD MORNING 2001 from kwest on Vimeo.

Sheek Louch: Good Love

I dont really care about the song, but Michael K. Williams has a spot in the video, so I feel a need to support it.

I could step out here right now

Songs #8: Bossy Coyote

she's a boss!
Here's a little something to chill you out, oddly enough. Listen to it laying down with your eyes closed. --RWK

Kelis - Bossy vs. Coyote (Too Hard Aeroplane Remix (Neon Coyote Blend))

[Pic: you love to hate her, especially here.]

Encounter #70: When I grow old.

My friend Kevin put this clip up when Edward Yang died last summer. It's not because I missed seeing The Terrorizer on Friday, nor is it because I'll probably have to miss A Brighter Summer Day this Wednesday, but I've been thinking about Yi Yi a lot recently. It's just so gentle. It's the kind of film I want more of in my life. At a bar tonight my friend Cam was talking about how he wanted to watch a Hayao Miyazaki movie that wasn't Mononoke Hime but was similar to it -- that he hadn't seen -- even though he knows it doesn't exist. I should have told him to watch this picture. Instead we talked about how great John From Cincinnati is... go figure. (I think it makes sense, though.) --RWK

Encounter #69: One Shot

Starring Baron Davis, directed by Emmanuelle Chriqui. That's a lifestyle. He's easily the coolest NBA player. --RWK

Encounter #68: Motion picture, it's called.

Sorry again to those who need subtitles. Dig how Fritz Lang says the cinemascope frame was invented for serpents. And the Olympic discus toss: Jerry envisions himself as Odysseus, doesn't he? Is he really, only a stand-in for all the producers who made JLG's picture-making life "hell"? I don't think so. I think there has to be at least some of JLG in Jerry. Makes me think, again, always, during the opening weekend of Funny Games, FUCK YOU, Haneke. You can love cinema and make a movie called Contempt and not hate on your audience: you can make fun of yourself a little instead. Not only is it much more endearing, it's a better way to be in the world. --RWK

Genius Marketing #10: Le Mépris, bande-annonce originale
Songs #7: Théme de Camille

After reading good buddy Steve Boone's takedown of Contempt at The House, I wound up searching for clips on youtube (can I ever not "waste time"?) and came across this amazing trailer. Makes me want to see it again even more. Especially on a big screen. I could live in that score most days. And, you know, Brigitte Bardot's naked ass. (O, snap!) --RWK

Georges Delarue - Théme de Camille (zshare audio files are automatically on repeat...ahh!)

[Pic is no mystery. I'm handing this one to you. Plus another to, um, grow on. Both were stolen. I do not own _Contempt_, although I wouldn't mind that. My friends all know its cover beckons me whenever we're in the DVD section of Amoeba.]

UPDATE, ten minutes later:
Duh: Rialto is re-releasing the picture. Here's the ad with subtitles, if you're into that sort of thing. Or you just don't understand French and think that's the way you're meant to enjoy this trailer. (I don't think that's the case.)

Encounter #67: I Lust U

Neon Neon will probably get big. Funny that one half of this duo first got pub for making music (made of bleats and pops and odd sounds; genuinely weird "hip hop") with Dose One. I don't quite like this song that much (it's, wudduyacallit, obvious?) but I can see some bedroom dudes remixing it into something way more fun and, let's face it, crunchy. If Ocelot get their hands on it, you know where it's going. If LA Riots get their hands on it, you know where it's going. I think I'd rather hear Moulinex's grind. Call this my off-in-a-corner vote. Scroll down on this post to get some free listens of other songs. Or, if you like this song, click here to get it off zshare. Hey, it'll probably grow on me if I listen to the mp3 instead of looking at some fool named Gruff Rhys not smile. --RWK

Genius Marketing #9: U by Kotex

"You've only got one." ...beaver. Yup, ladies. The Australians push the envelope by giving not just a "dirty" name to a private part but by embodying such name as a puppet. Guess they're not too far from where this was made; so it makes some sense. --RWK [via copyranter]

I mostly just want this song to be remixed, but its dope nonetheless.

The myspace page will have songs at the end of this week. They promise. Again: Thank you a million, Mia. You're the coolest. --RWK

Encounter #66: L.E.S. Artistes

While I'm more a fan of the XXXChange remix (Big Stereo) than the original song, this video is something else. Something scary and gorgeous and fun and inventive -- but simple. Simple enough that, with the right camera and some smarts, it looks like something I could wrangle together. Not that I have that kind of smarts, or the right camera, or know enough people willing to get splattered with paint. Nima Nourizadeh does, though, and that's a good thing. Besides, I'm happy being me. I once was an LES artist, too, making zines, and that was tons of fun, even if the Kinkos costs were expensive. But now I've got the internet, which is free, and just as cool, only different. Still, I want to throw a bucket of paint on some people some day. --RWK

What a cast. Give these men work.

To tide us over until Cuyler finishes his final write up, here's three moments I really enjoyed, in one way or another, last night. Marlo looked so pleased to have some adrenaline running. Slim is the coolest. And, there you have it: Carver is the man for the future. Fitting that the show's best moments belong to its black actors. Here's to Simon and Burns employing so many. Maybe they'll do another series, maybe they won't, but I hope they can do their best to help the careers of some of their stars, like Andre Royo and Clarke Peters and Seth Gilliam, who don't have the kind of profile that Michael K Williams enjoys. I'll have more to say about this next week when Cuy and I transcribe our 10-week conversation on the merits and shortsights of this show. I mean, I've devoted over 60 TV hours of my life to it, it's got to be worth something, right? Right. It's worthy. --RWK

[Pix stolen unabashedly from Alan Sepinwall.]

MOBIUS UPDATE: Cuy's last entry can be read here.
